A Fortune 500 building products manufacturer needs a Plant Controller for an upstate South Carolina site, the lone finance seat on a seven-member leadership team, with a major furnace capital event ahead as the first big test.

Overview

Cost Accounting Recruiters is working with a Fortune 500 building products manufacturer to fill a Plant Controller seat at a plant in the Greenville, SC area. The company builds and sells building products across North America and Europe through several business lines and has been in business for the better part of a century. This location produces building products, turns roughly $50 million a year with a workforce near 150, and is currently running at about 60% of capacity. The Plant Controller is the single finance person on site, which makes the scope wider than the title implies: you hold one of seven seats on the plant leadership team and also run the non-financial administrative functions, covering sourcing, materials and production planning, warehouse operations, IT and security.

Role depth

The full planning and reporting cycle is yours: budgets, forecasts, reconciliations and monthly results delivered to a director-level audience, while the corporate accounting group handles journal entries and general ledger work. The control environment is yours as well, including SOX, the representation letter routine and the ongoing sign-off process that keeps ownership of internal controls documented and clear. The solid line runs to the Plant Leader and a dotted line to the regional finance leader, so you are finance's voice inside the plant and the plant's voice back to the segment.

There is real activity to steer over the next year. A furnace rebuild is on the schedule for next summer, bringing a furlough plus the contingency work, planning and investment analysis that go with it. Three of the seven leadership seats are expected to change hands in the months ahead, so whoever takes this role becomes a stabilizing presence while the team re-forms. Outside the numbers, you will lead the TPM office pillar and take part in the plant's other pillar teams, the company's take on lean and continuous improvement.

In our words

The hiring team knows exactly what works here, based on how a controller at a sister location operates: someone who refuses to sit in a silo, who partners closely with operations, HR, technical staff and the people running the lines, and who can translate financial results into plain language for non-finance audiences. They want you out on the floor and close to the business, spotting where margin is leaking, reading the data, seeing what is coming and giving operational direction instead of reporting history. Integrity and a serious work ethic were described as non-negotiable, along with a willingness to hold the line on the rules and follow through.

Whether you are already a Plant Controller or a cost manager or plant finance manager ready to move up, this seat hands you more of the business than most controller jobs do. You own a single-site P&L, the administrative functions wrapped around it, and a chair where plant leadership counts on finance to help set direction.

Direct reports

Two salaried people report to you, a production scheduler and a purchasing specialist or buyer, and neither sits in finance. The scheduler leads four of their own, and the buyer oversees two in the warehouse.

Software and ERP

The ERP here is SAP. It is treated as a plus rather than a gate, so strong manufacturing finance candidates who have not used SAP are still very much in consideration.

Benefits

There is a 15% annual bonus attached to the role, and relocation assistance is available for the right candidate.

Location

The plant sits in upstate South Carolina within the Greenville area, roughly 45 minutes out, with lake country and a major university campus nearby. Living costs across the upstate come in well under the national average, housing is reasonably priced, and both Atlanta and Charlotte are comfortable drives.
