Build the entire cost accounting function from the ground up at a newly public rocket company that already landed on the Moon — and help them figure out how to make space access affordable at scale.
The Overview
Firefly Aerospace is seeking a Director of Cost Accounting — a newly created position to help build out the accounting team. Firefly just went public in August and is approximately seven years old. They operate a manufacturing facility known as 'Rocket Ranch' in Briggs, Texas, and are working on cutting-edge projects including the Alpha launch vehicle (a 1-ton rocket), the Eclipse medium-launch vehicle, and the Blue Ghost lunar lander developed in partnership with NASA.
The Role
The Director of Cost Accounting will have overall responsibility for the valuation of production inventory including capitalized variances to standard cost, and any appropriate reserves. You will recruit and build a team of two to four cost accountants/managers, oversee all manufacturing cost accounting activities (month-end close, accurate costs, labor & overhead absorption, inventory management, freight and duty tracking), and collaborate with FP&A and Engineering teams to ensure Bill of Materials accuracy and develop forward-looking plans and forecasts.
In Our Words
Because Firefly creates cutting-edge products, a large part of this role involves building a bridge between the finance department and the engineering teams, who are often literal rocket scientists. The company's mentality is 'break it and then learn from the mistakes' — encouraging teams to rush to break something because the failure provides invaluable learning. This culture means Firefly needs a strong financial professional with public company experience who can hold firm to GAAP principles and help teams understand why certain rules are necessary.
Systems & ERP
The company's ERP system, Odoo, is in place but not fully implemented — 95% of groundwork is complete. The successful candidate will be involved in final processes, fine-tuning, and helping migrate to more detailed procedures over time.
The Benefits
This is a unique opportunity to work for a company that will be key to getting to Mars and has already helped NASA return to the Moon for the first time in 15 years. Firefly has achieved dramatic cost savings, and their entire business model is based on their ability to continue delivering space products at a fraction of historical costs. The finance team is a strong support system with the backup and resources needed for success.
